How to get to island of Oléron?
Since 1966, the island has been linked to the mainland by a three-kilometer bridge. This bridge is the third longest viaduct in France after that of Saint-Nazaire and the Island of Ré. The island of Oléron bridge can also be crossed by bike or on foot, a cycle path and a sidewalk being present in each direction of traffic.
Thanks to the bridge, the proximity of the motorway and the service to neighboring stations by high-speed train and Intercity trains, it is very easy to get to the island of Oléron.
By car
By car, the island of Oléron is served by the A10 motorway, the "Saintes" exit being 50 kilometers from the bridge by the departmental road 728.
Travelers coming from the north can also exit the motorway at Saint-Jean d'Angély, thus saving a few kilometers and a few euros on the toll. On the other hand, this road via Rochefort may have a longer duration than that previously indicated.
By bus
Bus connections are provided from La Rochelle, Rochefort, Saintes and Surgères. The timetables of the bus lines that serve the stations in these cities allow connections to be made with the main trains.
By train
Several daily TGVs run between La Rochelle or Surgères and Poitiers, Tours or Paris-Montparnasse. By taking the coach then the TGV, it is thus possible to go from Saint-Pierre d'Oléron to Paris in five hours. In addition, Intercity or TER services serve Rochefort and Saintes from Angoulême, Bordeaux and Nantes.
On a boat
It is also possible to arrive in the island by boat, in particular by taking the fast connection between Boyardville and La Rochelle. Maritime services also allow you to reach Oléron from Île de Ré or Île d'Aix, as well as, on certain days, from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus or La Tremblade.
