Périgny, a new town at the gates of La Rochelle
Located at the entrance to the city of La Rochelle, the town of Périgny now has a little over 7,000 inhabitants.
It would seem that the territory was already occupied in Antiquity since traces of an establishment dating from the Gallo-Roman period have been discovered at the site of present-day Périgny. It is from this period that the city would take its modern name. A first hypothesis indeed suggests that the term “Périgny” comes from the deformation of the name of the ancient villa “villa patrinii”. According to another explanation, the word would rather be built on a remnant of popular Latin "petra ignitis" (burnt stone).
Over the centuries, the Gallo-Roman site, which became a village, has turned into a new town. The few farms, whose land extended to the site of the current industrial zone, gave way to several residential areas and a veritable urban center. The town of Périgny now offers several leisure activities, particularly with the Palmilud water park.
A peaceful town just a stone's throw from the lively La Rochelle area
By its proximity to the city of La Rochelle, Périgny constitutes an ideal gateway to enjoy the activities of the maritime city: from the Old Port to the Grand Aquarium of La Rochelle via the music festival "Les Francofolies" or the "Grand Pavois" nautical show.
